How Does Flagyl 200mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml Work

Flagyl 200mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml has “Metronidazole” as an active therapeutic agent. It contains a nitro group in its structure that is reduced to a chemically active form in the hypoxic cells (cells with a lack of oxygen) or when anaerobes are around. This active component causes biochemical lesions in the cells and causes cell death. Metronidazole produces its action in the DNA of an anaerobic bacterial cell by causing the loss of DNA helical structure and inhibiting synthesis.

How To Use Flagyl 200mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml

Take the 1 to 2 teaspoons full orally (by mouth) with or without meal according to the recommended dosing schedule which is usually 2 to 3 times a day. Avoid using alcohol during the treatment and 3 days after having the last dose.

Adult Dose

Adults and children over 10 years of age: 10ml (2 teaspoons full) with 8 hours of interval. The usual duration of treatment is 7 days depending upon the severity of the infection.

Pediatric Dose

The pediatric dose depends upon the weight of a child. The dose is given after every 8 to 12 hours depending on the age of the child. Flagyl 200mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml will be administered 2 to 3 hours before surgery to prevent the occurrence of infection after surgery.

Children more than 8 weeks to 12 years of age: 20 to 30 mg/kg as a single dose or divided 8 hourly as 7.5 mg/kg. The dose can be increased to 40 mg/kg depending on the seriousness of the infection. 7 days is the usual duration of treatment.

For children below 8 weeks of age: 15 mg/kg as a single dose given once a day or divided as 7.5 mg/kg to be given after every 12 hours.

  • There is a need for re-administering Flagyl 200mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml after dialysis because the active agent and its metabolites are removed during eight hours of dialysis.

  • The current or chronic CNS disease may get aggravated. Therefore, Flagyl 200mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml should be given with caution to patients with CNS disease.
  • Hepatotoxicity and acute liver failure can occur in people with Cockayne syndrome (a rare disease characterized by a small-sized head, delayed development, and growth). Flagyl 200mg/5ml Suspension 90 ml should be used in such population only if no other alternative is available and after assessing the benefits over risk.
