Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm is a topical medicine that is a combination of synthetic steroids and an antibacterial preparation. It effectively combines a corticosteroid (betamethasone) and an antibiotic (neomycin) to eliminate bacterial infections and inflammation on the skin. Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm is prescribed for the treatment of a number of inflammatory skin conditions with the presence of bacterial infection or when it is expected to occur. This includes eczema (discoid/infantile types), sunburn, insect bites, psoriasis, and dermatoses, among many others. Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm helps reduce redness and swelling as treats the infection. Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm is available in the form of cream in a tube, meant for external use only.

 

How Does Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm Work

Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm is more suited for inflammatory skin conditions with an ongoing bacterial infection as well. It works by acting on the skin via two basic mechanisms. Firstly, Betamethasone being a Glucocorticoid controls the production of proteins that lead to inflammation by binding to Glucocorticoid receptors and interacting with DNA sequences. Also, it controls the infiltration and migration of inflammatory cells like leukocytes. It also inhibits Phospholipase A2 which speeds up the process of prostaglandin formation, a key mediator in inflammatory reactions. Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm thus decreasing inflammation. Secondly, neomycin disrupts bacterial growth.


Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm is prescribed for the management of a variety of skin conditions including

  • Dermatitis (atopic, stasis)
  • Severe eczema 
  • Psoriasis 
  • Dermatoses 
  • Otitis externa 
  • Pruritis 
  • Genital intertrigo 
  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis

Dosage

Adult Dose

A thin film of Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm is applied two or three times a da, or as directed by the doctor. A small amount on the fingertips should be gently rubbed in. Application on the face is not advised for more than 5 days.

Child Dose

Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm must not be used on children without consulting a doctor. It is not considered safe for application in patients aged 2 years and younger. Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm is not recommended to be used for more than 7 days. Smaller amounts should be applied to a child’s body due to height and physique differences. Commonly a pea-sized quantity on the fingertip is sufficient to cover the affected skin.

Elderly Dose

Apply small amounts 2 to 3 times a day, in consultation with a doctor, caution is advised.

 

How To Use Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm

Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm is available in the form of cream for external use and is best suited for lesions that are moist in nature or weeping. Apply it with clean hands usually twice or thrice daily after cleaning the affected skin properly and gently drying afterward. In children, careful application and monitoring are advised to avoid accidental ingestion. Betamethasone is a high-strength steroid, thus a prolonged application of more than 4 weeks is not advised.

  • Wash and gently pat dry your skin before applying the Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm. 
  • Take out a small amount of {{product} on your fingertips and gently rub it in to form a thin, even coat over the affected area.
  • Wash your hands after application, an additional amount can be reapplied if Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm gets wiped off from any part.
  • Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm is applied to the skin 1 to 3 times or as per the doctor’s suggestion.
  • Tight bandages are not advised, discuss with a doctor how to protect the wound.

Inform your healthcare supervisor immediately if you notice any of the following symptoms in your baby:

  • Allergic reaction 
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Dryness of skin 
  • Tingling/ burning sensation at the site of application
  • Headache 
  • Excessive hair growth (hypertrichosis)
  • Blistering
  • Temporary worsening of symptoms
  • If used in higher amounts around the eye, it can cause a rise in the intraocular pressure.

Contraindications

Please tell your doctor if you have a history of any of the following before using Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm:

  • Allergy to Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm or one of its constituents
  • Skin lesions due to viral infection (for example herpes)
  • Skin lesions due to fungal infection (for example athlete's foot)
  • Cushing’s disease
  • Acne 
  • Rosacea 
  • Glaucoma/cataract (especially avoid application near eyes)
  • Any skin condition likely to aggravate with  Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm such as acne
  • Perioral dermatitis 
  • Perianal or genital lesions
  • Secondary infections due to pseudomonas 

Precautions

Please‌ ‌tell‌ ‌your‌ ‌doctor‌ ‌about‌ ‌any‌ ‌of‌ ‌the‌ ‌following‌ ‌conditions‌ before starting or during the treatment with ‌Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm:‌ 

  • If there is a history of allergy to similar medicines.
  • Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly after application, avoid getting ‌Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm in your eyes.
  • Do not use ‌Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm for long durations in continuity, if there is no noticeable difference in your condition after a week contact your doctor.
  • If ‌Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm was prescribed for prolonged use by the doctor, it may put you at risk of slow wound healing due to immunosuppression, take precautions accordingly.
  • Betamethasone in ‌Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm is a steroid that when used for a longer duration can cause suppression of adrenal function.
  • Avoid applying to sensitive parts like inside the nose, mouth or around the mouth, genitals, near eyes.
  • Avoid using Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm for treatment of diaper rash in infants.
  • To prevent the risk of burns, it is advisable to refrain from approaching fire or open flames.
  • Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm may initially cause exacerbation of existing symptoms or cause itching, redness, or irritation of the skin which should subside.
  • Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm is best applied on naked skin without any bandage except if advised to loosely cover it by your doctor.
  • Diabetic patients must also exercise caution while using Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm.

Certain medications could interact with Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm and may increase or decrease its absorption. Make sure to inform your doctor about all the drugs you’re currently taking, in which case, your doctor might alter the treatment. 

  • Other skin medications (you can apply such drugs at different timings)
  • Cosmetics (may decrease the efficacy, especially on the face)
  • Skin products that might irritate the skin
  • Neuromuscular blocking agents like atracurium, succinylcholine 
  • Immune suppressants like Methotrexate

#1. How to store Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm?

Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm is to be kept away from the reach of children, in a cool dry place between 15 to 25°C,  away from direct sunlight and humidity as that tends to change the chemical nature of certain drugs.

#2. What if I use too much of Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm?

In case of excessive usage or accidental ingestion, kindly contact your doctor or nearby hospital right away. The amount of medication that can result in severe side effects varies from person to person. Toxicity results in slowing down of heart rate and difficulty breathing accompanied by dizziness and abdominal pain.

It is not clear whether or not, Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm can harm you or the baby during pregnancy. Therefore, it should not be used in pregnancy or by breastfeeding mothers without consulting your doctor regarding the safety of Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm first.

With regards to safety please make sure to consult your doctor first before using it. Although topical use of Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm is not known to show any harmful effects, avoid application of Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm on the chest or from where the baby might ingest it.

#7. How long will I have to continue taking  Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm?

Treatment can last up to a week or two, depending on your condition and response to the Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm. Treatment must not continue for longer periods in continuity, exceeding 4 weeks.

#8. Can I go outside after applying Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm?

Commonly Betnovate-N 0.1%+0.5% Cream 20 gm is prescribed to be applied twice daily, you should avoid sun or UV exposure. Sensitivity to the sun may develop therefore If it is necessary to step outside make sure to protect your skin from direct sun or wear sunblock or clothes covering your skin.
