Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml

Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml belongs to a class of drugs called “beta-lactam antibacterials/penicillins” (broad-spectrum antibiotics) that are used to treat bacterial infections, such as chest infections (including pneumonia), UTIs (urinary tract infections), and dental abscesses. In children, it is used to treat chest infections and ear infections. They work by preventing the formation of the protective bacterial wall which is essential for the survival of the bacteria.

How does Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml work?

Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml has a bactericidal mode of action which means it kills the susceptible bacteria during the phase of its active reproduction in the host cell. It does so by blocking the biosynthesis of bacterial cell-wall resulting in bacterial cell death.

It is used in the treatment of:

• Infections of the respiratory tract (nose, throat, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs)
• ENT (eyes, nose, and throat) infections
• Urinary tract infections
• Skin and soft tissue infections.
• Dental infections (dental abscesses - a buildup of pus inside teeth and gums)
• Gonorrhoea (sexually-transmitted diseases)
• Prophylaxis of bacterial endocarditis (bacterial infection of the inner layer of the heart or heart valves). 

Dosage

Adult Dose

The usual dose is 250mg 3 times daily. In severe cases, you may double the dose.

Otitis media: 500 mg every 8 hours.

Severe or recurrent purulent RTI: 3 gm twice daily.

Acute UTI: 3 gm repeated once 12 hours later.

Gonorrhoea: 3 gm single dose.

Dental abscess: 3 gm repeated once 8 hours later.

Prophylaxis of endocarditis: Single 3gm dose one hour before dental procedure from which bacteremia may arise. Repeat 6 hour later if necessary.

Child Dose

Children over 5 yr: 250 mg 3 times daily. In severe cases double the dose.

Prophylaxis of endocarditis: Under 5 years, 750 mg; 5-10 years, 1.5 gm. (Both 1 hour before dental procedure from which bacteremia may arise)

Pregnancy use and lactation

If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby, please consult your doctor before using Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml. If you are breastfeeding, please consult your doctor before taking Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml. However, this medication has no evidence of risk in such cases.

How to use Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml?

It is advised to complete the course of treatment even if you start feeling better. For children; the dose is usually lower. The correct dose is calculated using your child’s weight. Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml can be taken before or after food. Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water (Do not chew or crush the tablet). If you find it difficult to swallow, you can break them into half and then swallow one piece after the other. For children and those who find it difficult to have tablets, you will be prescribed Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml in its liquid form. You will be provided with a plastic syringe or spoon, by your pharmacist, to help you measure out the correct dose. Make sure your doses are evenly spaced throughout the day. To allow your body to adjust to the medication, your doctor will probably start you on a low dose of Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml and then gradually increase it with time. 

Like most medicines, Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml has some side effects which include:

Common:

• Nausea 
• Vomiting 
• Diarrhoea 
• Rash

Contraindications

Please inform your doctor if you have a history of any before using Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml:

• Hypersensitivity (allergy) to penicillins, cephalosporins, or other beta-Lactams - allergic reaction indicated by skin rash, swelling around the face area, wheezing, chest tightness, and breathing difficulty
• History of Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml associated or penicillin-associated jaundice or hepatic (liver) dysfunction.
• Infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever caused by EBV virus).
• Liver problems
• Kidney problems
• have recently had, or are about to have, any vaccinations as it may decrease the effectiveness of the vaccine.
• The liquid form is not suitable for people with a rare inherited condition called phenylketonuria as it may contain aspartame which may be harmful to you. 

Precautions

Please tell your doctor about any of the following conditions while using Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml:

• Renal (kidney) impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min) - monitor kidney function
• Hepatic (liver) impairment - monitor liver function
• Monitor hematological (blood-related) function in neonates
• Risk of crystalluria (cloudy urine) with high doses, patients should be well hydrated. Do not dilute syrup below half-strength
• Renal impairment (kidney damage)
• Infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever caused by EBV)
• Risk of acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (inflammatory skin condition resulting in large fluid-filled blister-like areas) - in such a case, discontinue permanently
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding 
• If you are about to undergo surgery 

Certain medications could interact with Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml, hence, in that case, your doctor might alter your dosage and make sure to monitor blood sugar levels more closely.

Please inform your doctor about the use of the following before taking Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml:

• Anticoagulants such as warfarin
• Allopurinol and probenecid (used to treat gout)
• Tetracyclines
• Methotrexate (used to treat cancer or rheumatic diseases)
• Other antibiotics

Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml may cause false positive results with certain diabetic urine testing products (cupric sulfate-type) and it may affect the result of certain lab tests.

Antibiotics start working almost immediately. It takes around an hour for Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml to reach peak levels in your body. However, you will feel symptom relief and show improvement within 1-3 days of taking Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml.

#2. How long will I have to take Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml for?

The duration for using Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml depends on the type and severity of the infection. You will probably be prescribed to take it for 5-14 days. If you do not feel better after completing your course of medicine, or if you feel worse at any time, contact your doctor.

#3. Can I stop taking Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml once I feel better?

Do not just stop taking the medicine, make sure to complete your treatment course even if you feel better. Stopping it suddenly may cause the bacteria to start multiplying again and the infection could come back. The bacteria could also develop resistance to the antibiotic which will make it ineffective in the future.

#4. Can I drink alcohol with Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml?

Consuming alcohol when taking Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml is not known to cause any problems.  

#5. What if I forget to take Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml?

In case you miss a dose, take your next dose on time, and do not try making up for the missed dose by doubling it up. If it helps to remind you, set an alarm so you do not miss any dose. Make sure to complete your course of treatment even if you feel better and think you do not need to take it anymore.

Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml is usually generally recommended for 5-14 days, therefore, do not take it for any longer than the prescribed time period. 

#8. What if the Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml gives me thrush?

At times people develop a fungal infection called thrush after taking a course of antibiotics like Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml. This is because antibiotics kill the normal harmless bacteria that help to protect you against such infections. 

#9. Can Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml stain teeth?

If you take Amoxil 125mg/5ml Syrup 90 ml in its liquid form, it can stain your teeth. However, it is not permanent, and brushing your teeth properly will help you get rid of the stains. Capsules are not known to cause any staining.
