This drug is prescribed to patients with high blood pressure (normal blood pressure for adult’s is usually 120/80 mmHg) to reduce the strain on the heart muscles and allows the heart to pump blood at its normal pace.

Hypertension left untreated can cause severe damage to the brain, heart, kidney,blood vessels and other body organs.High blood pressure is also caused by narrowing of the arteries (blood vessels that take blood to the organs) thus Advant 16mg Tablet 7 'S helps prevent the decrease in diameter of the vessels keeping them healthy and working efficiently.

Advant 16mg Tablet 7 'S is prescribed to patients who have high blood pressure and can be used to treat heart failure.A tablet or two of Advant 16mg Tablet 7 'S daily is the recommended dose, to be taken either with or without food.Doses may vary for each patient as dosage is dependent upon the weight,stage of illness,each patient’s response to Advant 16mg Tablet 7 'Sand any pre-existing medical condition a patient might have.

How Does Advant 16mg Tablet 7 'S Work

This drug belongs to a group of drugs known as Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers. Angiotensin is a natural hormone found in the body that works by narrowing the blood vessels in the human body. Advant 16mg Tablet 7 'S works by inhibiting angiotensin from performing its duties and therefore preventing the narrowing of blood vessels and aiding the free and proper flow of blood to the organs and through the blood vessels.

How To Use Advant 16mg Tablet 7 'S

Advant 16mg Tablet 7 'S's dosage may differ for each patient as the treatment regime for each patient depends upon their weight, stage of illness, each patient’s response to Advant 16mg Tablet 7 'S and any pre-existing medical condition a patient might have.

In adults,the standard dose of Advant 16mg Tablet 7 'S is a tablet per day. In children between the ages of 6-17 years; depending upon the weight of the child the dosage may range from 2-16mg per day if the weight of the child is below 50kg and 4-32mg in cases where the weight of the child is above 50kg.Advant 16mg Tablet 7 'S is safe to use in children aged 1 year and above, for the treatment of high blood pressure although dosages may vary depending on the severity of each case and weight of the child in question.

Advant 16mg Tablet 7 'S is not to be used to treat heart failure in children under 18 years of age.It is advised to not stop treatment abruptly without consulting a doctor as the risk of heart failure and stroke is significantly increased without the drug.If you miss a dose of the medication,make sure you take it as soon as possible on that same day. If you don’t remember you missed the dose until the next day,do not double the dose and take your medication as per schedule as that will lead to serious adverse effects. If this happens very often, try setting an alarm as a reminder.

Pregnancy Use And Lactation

Advant 16mg Tablet 7 'S is not to be taken or prescribed to expecting and lactating mothers as it may have fatal consequences for the unborn child.If you are taking the drug and become pregnant,inform your doctor immediately.Small amounts of this drug can be transferred to the child through breast milk and therefore cause low blood pressure in the child thus Advant 16mg Tablet 7 'S isn't recommended to lactating mothers.If you are planning to conceive and are taking losartan as treatment,then refer to the doctor.The physician is likely to change your medicine and dosage.

Contraindications

Please tell your doctor if you have a history of any of the following before using Advant 16mg Tablet 7 'S:

  • Allergic reaction to losartan or any other drug or ingredient
  • Severe hepatic impairment (liver damage)
  • Cholestasis (decreased bile flow).
  • Hyperkalemia (increased levels of potassium)
  • Dehydration
  • Potassium Supplements
  • Renal impairment (kidney damage)
  • Diabetes

Precautions

Please tell your doctor about any of the following conditions before using Advant 16mg Tablet 7 'S:

  • Intravascular volume depletion (reduced circulating blood volume)
  • Anaesthesia
  • Renal impairment (kidney damage)
  • Haemodialysis (process of purifying blood)
  • Renal (kidney) artery stenosis (narrowing)
  • Aortic or mitral stenosis (heart valve narrowing)
  • Kidney transplant
  • Obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (abnormal thickening of heart muscle)
  • Severe congestive heart failure
  • Mild to moderate hepatic impairment (liver damage)
  • Primary hyperaldosteronism (excessive aldosterone production).

The doctor might ask patients to get their potassium levels and liver and kidney function tests done periodically while taking Advant 16mg Tablet 7 'S

Interactions With Other Medications

Please tell your doctor about the use of the following before using Advant 16mg Tablet 7 'S:

  • K+ -sparing diuretics (Spironolactone,Amiloride)
  • K+ supplements
  • NSAIDs (Aspirin, Ibuprofen,Naproxen)
  • Lithium  (Prescribed for bipolar and/or depression)
  • Skeletal muscle relaxants.
  • Oral contraceptives 
  • Other antihypertensives (for lowering increased blood pressure)

Adverse Effects

SIDE EFFECTS MOST COMMONLY SEEN IN PATIENTS

  • Back pain
  • Dizziness
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Headaches
  • Stomach problems (diarrhea,nausea,vomiting)

SEVERE SIDE EFFECTS:

  • Extreme fatigue

  • Shortness of breath 
  • Muscle weakness
  • Allergic symptoms (Such as rash,swelling on lips or face)

How To Cope With Some Of The Adverse Effects

  • Headaches- In which case make sure you rest and drink plenty of fluids. Avoid the use of alcohol. Take a prescribed painkiller. Consult your doctor if the headaches last longer than a week or are severe.
  • Feeling dizzy or weak -If the medication makes you feel dizzy or weak, stop what you're doing and sit or lie down until you feel better. Do not drive or use tools or machinery in case of any of these effects.
  • Back pain- Keeping a warm compress on the affected area of the back when pain is present,will help bring relief to the patient.
  • Feeling or being sick (nausea or vomiting) or diarrhoea -Avoid eating rich or spicy food. It might help to take medication after food. If you're being sick, try drinking small, frequent sips of water. If you have diarrhoea, replenish with plenty of water or other fluids.
